2) The Vatican State is the smallest indipendent State of the World in the city centre of Rome. 3) Excursion to Tuscany. The famous region Tuscany is not so far from Civitavecchia. The region is big, we don't recommend to go from Civitavecchia to Florence because it is too far in one day but you could discover the Southern part of Tuscany, the so called Maremma. One of the prettiest villages in the Maremma Toscana is Pitigliano, which has been elected among one of the 100 most beautiful villages in Italy. Siena is 2 hours from Civitavecchia and is a jewel of Medieval style where you can visit the pretty Piazza del Campo and the Dome. Saturnia with its natural hot springs and thermal Baths is famous worldwide. Capalbio and its particular Giardino dei Tarocchi is just 50 minutes from Civitavecchia. One must when you visit Tuscany is to stop at a winery and do a wine tasting of the famous Tuscan Wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti or the less famous local wines.
4) Civita di Bagnoregio. The so called dying city was built on top of a tufa hill and the edges of this hill are disappearing. Orvieto is another picturesque Village on a tufa hill, Orvieto is located in the Umbria region on the border with Lazio and Tuscany. In the city centre of Orvieto you can spend a lovely day walking through the typical streets near the famous Cathedral of Orvieto or you can discover the Underground city (Orvieto sotterranea).
5) Tarquinia and the famous Etruscan Necropolis are the nearest important touristic places to Civitavecchia. The Necropolis of Tarquinia belong to the Unesco list of the World's Heritage sites and are decorated with frescoes datable up to the 6th century BC. Famous are the Tombs of the Jaguars, the Tomb of the Bulls and the Tomb of the Athletes. The little village of Tarquinia is enclosed by the city walls as all the medieval villages in central Italy. 6) Tuscania and Viterbo are only 50 minutes far away from Civitavecchia. Viterbo is the most important city of the Tuscia Laziale. Famous for its Thermal Baths but also for the medieval district San Pellegrino, Viterbo has the typical medieval walls and a lot of nice Trattorias. Not to miss near Viterbo the Farnese Palace of Caprarola, Villa Lante and the Park of the Monsters of Bomarzo. Tuscania is a picturesque village immersed in the hilly landscape of the Maremma Laziale.

8) Bracciano and the Lake of Bracciano belong to a Natural Area with a wide variety of protected flora and fauna. 9) Cerveteri and the Necropolis of Cerveteri belong together with the necropolis of Tarquinia to the Unesco list of the World's Heritage sites. Cerveteri was in fact during Etruscan times one of the most important cities. From the Necropolis of the Banditaccia is also coming the famous Sarcophagus of the spouses. You can reach Cerveteri in half an hour from Civitavecchia.
10) The castle of Santa Severa and the archaeological Area of Pyrgi are along the coast and quiet near from Civitavecchia. Located on the beautiful beach of Santa Severa, the castle was built to defend the coast from the attack of the Barbarians. During the sommer period many Romans invade Santa Severa and Santa Marinella because they have their sommer estates or they rent apartments to enjoy the seaside near Rome.
