Get your guide and discover the mysterious world of the Etruscans. The Etruscans were people living in the central part of Italy before the Romans conquered all Italy and almost all Europe. The most important Etruscan museum of the World is in Rome (Villa Giulia) but you can see archeological finds in the museums all over the World.
The Etruscans were good mariners and had trade contacts with Phenicians and Greek people. The Greeks called them Tirrenoi, therefore the name Tyrrenhian Sea whereas the Romans called them Tusci, therefore the name Tuscany.
The Etruscans used to have 12 main cities and met once a year in Falum Voltumnae for religious and economical purposes. They believed in the afterlife and what we have left today are only the Necropolises. Very famous are the necropolises of Tarquinia and Cerveteri which also belong to the Unesco list of the World's Archaeological sites.
We don't have many written testimonials but we know that their alphabet was a mixture of Phenician and Greek perhaps the result of the contacts with these people. They were also very good engineers. Probably the Romans took inspiration from them when they built streets, aqueducts and drain systems. Not a case in fact that three of the legendary roman kings (Servio Tullio, Tarquinio Prisco and Tarquinio il Superbo) had Etruscans origin.
Peculiarity of many Etruscan cities is that they were built on tufa hills, the typical vulcanic rock of all central Italy.
